I look forward to broadening both my knowledge of sustainable design and adaptive reuse in order to continue to use architecture to address contemporary issues that challenge communities while also celebrating their local culture.

Final Project

REGENESIS

A proposal for a combined micro farm and biomaterials factory to secure local food production and synthesise bioplastics to reduce food waste.

Milling as inspiration

Occupying a former steam flour mill, the design explores the forms of milling machines to create engaging public spaces within an internal courtyard overlooking the existing water basin. The forms of the breaker rolls, used to grind wheat into flour, inspired the glulam structure seen in this render.

Internal dynamic environments

The design also includes internal moving devices that enable opening and closing to facilitate interactions with visitors. These allow spaces to transition between public and private along a journey from the growth of food in the microfarms to the renewal of bioplastic through industrial composters.

Facilitating a new ‘Farm through factory’

As a response to our traditional ‘farm to fork’ scope on food, this project proposes a new ‘farm through factory’ scope which reuses food waste to produce bioplastic. This section helps to illustrate the processes involved inside the bioplastic production spaces. The microfarms on top are positioned to make use of the light entering the site and the hot air produced as a biproduct of the bioplastic production process to support a greenhouse for food production.

Journey to the Show

My incubator project explored the use of adjustable features within a cinema to facilitate the transformation of an auditorium into a day centre for adults with learning disabilities.

These included moving chairs, brise soleil, a tilting roof, and movable acoustic insulation.

The project explored how a making space could transition to a watching space as well as how different users could interact with one another to enable a more supportive community.

Awards

  • Awarded first place for a group project to deliver a classroom for Lakenheath Middle School
  • Co-leader of the design team that delivered the LuArc 2020 pavilion

Work Experience

I was fortunate enough to work alongside architects and technologists at Church Lukas as part of my eight month placement. I enjoyed working closely alongside project architects to deliver early stage documentation for a number of educational and residential projects.
