Final Project
Based in Woolwich, London, The Themepark Factory proposes an urban horticulture centre, dedicated to the reverse engineering of crop domestication and to provide a space for the celebration of community produce. Tackling issues of utilitarianism and local displacement, the centre will provide a means of earning where food and materials are grown to enable the park’s theme to adapt throughout the year.
Through looking at the relationship between plants and humans throughout time, the relationship becomes entangled with technology as mechanization has led to a point of global crop domestication. As crops now depend on human intervention for reproduction, an interdependence has emerged as produce will rot if not physically replanted, demanding human labour for survival. The scheme, therefore, looks to reverse this process and free mankind to enable growth for city dwellers in the marginal spaces of the city.
Exploring a botanical and industrial typology, the centre’s architecture language developed through a theme of ‘unravelment’ with building skin layers and woven glulam frames.
