Final Project
The Spiral Cycle is a workplace and a cycling experience located in Digbeth, Birmingham. The workplace is a bicycle factory which aims to reduce the need for motor transport on the roads by installing sustainable bicycles accessible across the city. The cycling experience introduces a ramp that leads to a viewing platform showcasing Digbeth’s urban environment.
Garden grown bicycles… The bicycles produced are made from grown on-site and imported bamboo which is then worked to produce a variety of bike frames.
A bicycle ramp which spirals around the building, with entry and exit points on each floor and surrounded by vegetation on the façade, creates a cycling experience for those riding up and down the building.
With Digbeth’s derelict landscape, The Spiral Cycle looks to re-invite nature in the neighbourhood and create a landmark noticeable from Birmingham central and other neighbourhoods.
A skate park for enthusiastic daredevils to test their skills and an outdoor gym for lovers of calisthenics and exercise.
The Helo Hub is an upskilling workshop which aims to re-train individuals who are at risk of redundancy. The upskilling profession is car manufacturing as a result of Digbeth’s large number of car mechanic garages.
Digbeth has a lack of green spaces. Therefore, the site introduces vegetation with hopes that a cross pollination between the local birds and bees will spread plant seeds into empty spaces to increase the local greenery.
With Digbeth’s very similar architecture, the Hub is designed with an organic twist to create a separation between the conventional style and introduce a new experience into the landscape.
As part of an intervention module, the Hub now incorporates a green wall and solar shades to mitigate incoming solar glare and to further encourage the need for greenery in Digbeth.
