FRITID ISLAND

This project attempts to rethink the way we design masterplans through the notion of a ‘small Olympic games’ with the end goal to redevelop Copenhagen’s urban space, innovate the way the Olympics is held and reuse existing facilities.

Masterplan and stadium

This project prioritises retrofitting of existing infrastructure whilst focusing on the the landscape to achieve new urban parklands. One of the main features of this island is the Refshaleoen Arena which is essentially a progressive multi-purpose stadium design that becomes the new heartbeat of the island.

Sustainability and Activity

The masterplan recognises Copenhagen, which is known for its cycle friendly roads, as a active city, with recent participations in events such as Tour de France. The stadium is essentially a microcosm of the holistic approach to the island with sustainability and activity at the heart of the thinking. The stadium provides a new public realm, long lasting legacy and incorporates programs such as schools and housing.

Refshaleoen Arena

The stadium recognises the issues surrounding post-Olympic events and their facilities, adopting the idea that the use of the facilities for the event is just as important as its use after it. To summarise, this project aims practice sustainable techniques whilst providing a long lasting legacy for Copenhagen which can be seen as exemplary for future Olympic designs.
